With swift, expressive lines, Jack Beder captures urban life in Montreal in this drawing, Two Men on Park Bench. Sketched from life, the drawing shows Beder's confidence in sketching gesture and form. The two figures, sketched in bold strokes, sit in easy posture, either in thought or conversation. The piece feels spontaneous yet intentional, characteristic of Beder’s observational style from the 1940's.

The scene comes from Beder's time spent in Montreal’s public spaces, where he often sketched the people and their daily life.

This drawing on paper is 5 x 8 inches in size and is signed and dated by the artist in the bottom right.

This work is on page 30 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication produced by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery. This sketch was featured in the Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada exhibition at Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery.
