Near Cantley, Quebec by Maurice Haycock is a 16 x 20 inch pastel on paper that is protected by museum glass and signed and dated in the bottom left. It was produced in 1944 and the title and date of November 1944 are featured on the reverse. The piece depicts a winter landscape on the banks of a river in rural Quebec. Icy cold water flows through the scene, winding through the snow and rock that lines the shore. A small railroad bridge can be seen in the background, its metal frame connecting the two riverbanks. Haycock uses a strong contrast between light and dark to create interest and draw the eye into the piece. His use of a limited colour palette allows him to capture the frigid temperatures of the location.
