On Lake Joseph, Muskoka Lakes by George Horne Russell (1861-1933) is a 6.25 x 8.25 inch watercolour on paper protected by museum glass that was produced circa 1910 and is signed in the bottom right by the artist. The piece depicts a quiet scene in the Muskoka Lakes. The sky dominates the painting, the clouds reflected in the calm water below. Small islands can be seen off into the distance, painted in dark shapes that contrast against the light sky. Russel uses large washes and wet on wet watercolour techniques in the sky and the water and

a predominantly blue colour palette which gives the painting a calm and tranquility.

George Horne Russell immigrated to Canada in 1889 from Scotland and started painting images of the Canadian Rockies for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He settled in Montreal and was known as a major maritime painter by the end of his artistic career.
