Nicholas Hornyansky’s Sunshine on the Roofs, Vienna is a colour aquatint depicting a close, elevated view across the snow-covered rooftops of the Austrian capital. Steep roofs and tall chimneys overlap in a compressed arrangement, creating a dense pattern of angular forms and dark vertical accents. Patches of blue and muted reddish brown emerge through the predominantly grey-black palette, while bright areas of snow catch the winter sunlight along rooflines, chimney caps and ledges.

The scene is less concerned with architectural detail than with atmosphere and tonal contrast. Hornyansky uses the grainy texture of aquatint to suggest weathered masonry, drifting smoke and a heavy winter sky. The broad dark chimney near the centre anchors the composition, while the diagonal sweep of the foreground roof draws the eye into the tightly clustered cityscape. Although the title refers to sunshine, the light appears subdued and intermittent, illuminating isolated surfaces within an otherwise shadowed and wintry view.
