Frederick Stanley Haines’ The Road to Wilberforce captures the brilliant colour and quiet rural character of the Ontario countryside in autumn. A winding dirt road leads through rolling green fields toward a distant lake and layers of blue-violet hills. Two cattle amble along the road, while weathered split-rail fences follow the contours of the land and draw the eye deeper into the landscape.

Dominating the composition is a magnificent maple in full fall colour, its broad canopy ablaze with orange, rust, gold and touches of crimson. Haines contrasts these warm tones with the cool blues and purples of the distant hills and water, giving the scene both depth and vibrancy. His broad, confident brushwork simplifies the landscape into strong shapes and areas of colour, while the curving road and irregular fences lend a natural rhythm to the composition. The result is an inviting vision of rural Ontario at the height of autumn, combining pastoral tranquility with the richness and energy of the changing season.
