Forêt by William Brymner is a 14 x 10 inch watercolour on paper that was produced in 1897 and is protected under museum glass. The piece is signed and dated in the bottom right corner. It depicts a succession of thick, sturdy trees lining a simple dirt path in the woods. Their tall limbs hang over the trail, casting shadow on the forest floor beneath. The background is obscured by thick bushes creating a mysterious quality to the scene. Brymner uses a limited palette of neutral earth tones with pops of more saturated green throughout the composition. His portrayal of light and shadow is masterful.

Forêt was on display at Gemst and LaPointe in Montreal before being added to the Rookleys collection.
