Depicting the lives and daily workings of fishermen in the height of smelting season, Smelt Fishers, Quebec is an oil on panel piece by Newfoundland-born Canadian artist Robert Pilot. Born in 1898, Pilot was known for his depictions of the Quebec landscape.
The 8 x 10.5 inch painting, signed in the bottom right, illustrates the return of a large vessel from its fishing journey. Black smoke rises from the ship as it sails into the harbour, fisherman lining the shores looking out upon its arrival. Pilot uses a loose style of painting and simple shapes to lay the scene with a combination of warm and cool tones.
Smelt Fishers is signed, titled and dated 1955 on the reverse with an original price tag of $100. Provenance from our own gallery Rookleys Canadian Art is attested to on the reverse of the piece with the inclusion of our gallery sticker.
