Midsummer Haying by Robert Ford Gagen is a 11.75 x 18.25 inch watercolour on paper that is protected by museum glass. It was produced circa 1910 and is signed in the bottom right corner. This quaint landscape depicts a farmer as he toils in his field, collecting hay in his wagon. Gagen, a master of watercolour, uses soft blue washes to depict the cloud spattered sky above. He plays with light and scale to draw the viewer into the scene, where a wood picket fence lines a small farm house surrounded by trees. He showcases his skill with the level of detail he is able to achieve within such a small piece and his ability to truly bring the setting to life.
