Farm Scene, Near Valleyfield, Quebec by Robert Elmer Lougheed is a 17 x 24 inch oil on board produced circa 1960 and signed in the bottom right. The piece depicts two white horses as they graze in a brilliant green field on a warm, sunny day. A simple wooden fence encloses the stallions, dense bush surrounding it and lending them shade. Lougheed was known for his images of horses and country life. His skill in depicting the majesty of the animals is evident in this piece. He uses loose brush strokes and a strong contrast between light and dark to set the scene. His use of colour adds a lightness and cheeriness to the pastoral themed landscape.
This piece was on display at Continental Galleries in Montreal and at Heffel in Toronto before joining the Rookleys collection.
