Pulling the Logs by Peleg Franklin Brownell (1857-1946) is a 16 x 20 inch oil on canvas produced in 1910 that depicts a cold winter scene with two horses pulling a wagon through a snow clad forest. The piece is signed by the artist in the bottom right corner.

Brownell utilizes purple and pink hues in this winter landscape, creating a warmth reminiscent of an early morning sunrise. The sky is lit up softly in the background while dense and loose layers of paint make up the forest beneath. The white blanket of snow contrasts with the dark foliage, essentially dividing the canvas through the center.

Peleg Franklin Brownell was a celebrated Impressionist painter who produced work in oil, watercolour and pastel. His artistic career spanned across five decades. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Ontario Society of Artists as well as the founding member of the Canadian Art Club in Toronto.

Pulling the Logs was displayed at Galerie D’art Vincent before joining the Rookleys Canadian Art collection.
