Old Barn, Cap-A-L’Aigle by Nora Collyer is an 11.88 x 14 inch oil on panel produced in 1947 and signed in the bottom right corner. It is also signed, titled and dated on the reverse side and comes to Rookleys from Galerie d’Art Michel Bigué, Saint-Saveur in Quebec. The piece depicts a waterfront landscape, a small seaside town lining the shores. The sky overhead is dominated by sweeping clouds painted in tints of purple, pink and blue. Collyer uses deeper shades in the surrounding structures that contrast against the soaring stratosphere above. Small hills across the water draw the eye into the scene, off into the distance, adding depth to the piece.
Nora Collyer was known for her ability to convey a lively sensitivity in both her rural and urban landscapes. She was a member of the highly celebrated Beaver Hall Group and one of Canada’s most cherished painters.
