Vue d’Hochelaga by Marc Aurèle Fortin is a 13.5 x 20 watercolour piece signed in the lower left and preserved with museum glass. (Fortin) Being able to paint in all various types of mediums, this watercolour is an exemplary example of a naturistic cityscape. The rolling hills of Hochelaga are depicted with a bird's eye view highlighting a cityscape of brown and orange housing, apartment blocks, grey church towers, and city posts. A simple sky with a striking blue hill in the background compliments the sprinkles of the dark blue colour within the foremost trees. Fortin’s love and known style of trees beside nature creeping towards the city is integrated seamlessly with the city's surroundings.
The dramatic colour contrast of hills and city is complimented with black outlining, bringing the bold details of people working in the green fields below, along with villagers strolling about the field, a historical reminder of the lives closely intertwined of farm and city.
