One of Marc-Aurèle Fortin's famous Quebec village scenes, Village on the St, Lawrence River depicts a church and three surrounding buildings set atop rolling hills. The church with its tall steeple dominates the composition, acting as a visual anchor.

The piece is one of Fortin's most simplistic landscape compositions, employing his characteristic strong navy-blue line work but not deigning to concisely fill in their shapes. This choice, leaves the orange-beige wash as plain to see, and adds a nostalgic essence to the oil on panel piece.

Fortin utilizes a warm palette of reds and oranges throughout the piece, on the walls of the buildings and chimneys. Though the sky is composed of cool toned greys and whites, the apparent warm toned wash beneath imbues a cozy and homely feeling.
