Old Landmark, Kearney, ON depicts a farmhouse and barn set along a dirt road in a snowy rural landscape. A tall pine tree casts a shadow across the farmhouse, emphasizing its presence, while the barn stands beside it. The warm tones of the red brick house and wooden barn contrast with the clear blue sky, creating a sense of harmony and quiet charm.
John William Beatty (1869–1941) was a Canadian painter trained at the Ontario School of Art under Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. He exhibited alongside prominent Canadian artists, including Homer Watson and William Brymner, contributing to the development of a distinctly Canadian approach to landscape painting. Beatty’s talent is evident in his confident use of colour, where greens, purples, reds, yellows, and blues are harmoniously balanced across the canvas, giving the scene both warmth and depth.
This canvas demonstrates Beatty’s ability to take a modest rural scene and paint it with clarity and careful attention. Signed in the lower right, it reflects both his European training and his enduring commitment to presenting the Canadian environment with sensitivity and harmony. This oil on panel measures 10.5 x 13.75 inches and is signed on the bottom right.
