In Winter, Rue Henri Julien, 1977, John Little, Canadian, 1928–2024, depicts a quiet Montreal street in winter. A lone figure is seen from behind, a young girl dressed in a bomber jacket, tight-fitting jeans, and high-heeled boots typical of the late 1970s. She moves along the packed but unshovelled snow on the sidewalks and street. Brown and rust stone walk-up townhouses line the avenue, and period cars are parked along the thoroughfare, instantly situating the scene in its historical context.
Little was born and trained in Montreal, studying at the École des beaux‑arts de Montréal and working within a community of mid-century Canadian artists focused on cityscapes and seasonal scenes. He exhibited widely across Canada, including with the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Ontario Society of Artists, and participated in solo and group exhibitions at galleries such as Galerie d’Art Moderne (Montreal) and Wallack Galleries (Ottawa). His contemporaries included other urban realists in Quebec and Ontario whose work explored architecture, streetscapes, and the effects of light and season.
Winter, Rue Henri Julien demonstrates Little’s mastery of urban winter scenes, capturing the character of Montreal streets with clarity, atmosphere, and a strong sense of place. This oil on canvas measures 24 x 30 inches and is signed bottom right.
