Artist and Easel by J.E.H. MacDonald is a 7 x 9 inch oil on panel that was produced in 1913 and is signed and dated on the reverse. Also on the reverse is the inscription “To Eugene Beaupré, a souvenir of a fine holiday, with best wishes, J.E.H. MacDonald, July, 1913.” The painting depicts a solitary painter beneath a large maple.

The boughs of the oversized tree wind overtop of the figure as he paints beneath its shade.

The artist is the focal point of the piece. His white shirt contrasts with the rest of the painting which is composed almost entirely of varying hues of green. J.E.H. uses broad brush strokes and layers of paint to capture the impression of the scene, showcasing his skill at portraying light and shadow.
