Forest in the Snow by Henri Masson is an 18 x 24 inch oil on canvas produced in 1959 and signed in the bottom left corner. It is also titled and dated on the reverse of the painting. This dynamic winter landscape depicts a birchwood forest laden with snow. The predominantly monochromatic canvas is flecked with hints of yellow, orange and blue. Masson uses loose, gestural strokes and dry brushing techniques to create an extremely expressive scene. The branches and trunks of the bare trees intersect each other, creating interest and movement. A dark shadow looming in the background creates mystery, drawing the eye even further into the piece.
Forest in the Snow was on display at Maynards in Vancouver before coming to Rookleys Canadian Art.
