The Darling Barn in Medonte County, Ontario by Charles Comfort is a 20 x 26 inch oil on canvas produced circa 1977 and signed in the bottom right corner. The piece is also titled on the artist label on the reverse with Comfort Inventory #729. The painting depicts an ornate barn nestled in a serene country setting. Tall trees and rose bushes frame the building, while large clouds loom overhead. Comfort uses a colour palette dominated by shades of green but also incorporates yellow to cast a shadow over the entire painting. There is a mysterious quality to the piece, in the way the structure sits solitary amongst the trees, cast in an unnatural light.
Comfort was known to use a lot of symbolism in his paintings, connecting them with a deeper message. The piece comes to Rookleys from Heffel in Toronto.
