Carl Schaefer’s Lutheran Church at Purdy, ON is a lively watercolour of a small rural church set against a rugged Ontario landscape. The church rises sharply from the hillside, its tall steeple and simple gabled roof giving the scene a strong vertical focus amid the rolling trees and storm-swept sky.
The work has a brisk, expressive quality, with loose washes of blue-grey, green, ochre and brown suggesting wind, weather and movement across the countryside. The foreground rocks, rough fence posts and sloping ground give the composition a distinctly rural character, while the dramatic clouds add a sense of isolation and atmosphere. Schaefer balances architectural detail with energetic brushwork, making the church feel both humble and enduring within the landscape.
