Roadside Fruit Stand by Dewitt Drake is a 9 x 10.8 inch oil on board with an estate stamp on the bottom right corner. The piece came to us from D & E Lake Ltd in Toronto. It depicts an old fashioned country farm stand on the side of the road. The painting offers a looking glass back in time to when people used to buy goods from their local farmers and depend on their neighbors to fill their pantry.
Drake uses a soft colour palette of purple and pink against hues of bright green to bring a lighthearted feeling to the piece. His brush strokes are loose but manage to suggest significant detail.
Very little is known about Dewitt Drake’s life but he was well respected for his artistic merit, producing incredible landscape works from the early 1920’s well into the forties.
