Cineraria by Walter Joseph Phillips is a still life of lavender flowers blossoming towards the viewer. The close-up perspective draws you to the delicate details within the flower's heart, with petals changing to a darker purple in ink. The green and tan backdrop suggests ground, delivering the eye again to the lavender and purple blooms. The cluster is basking in filtered sunlight, which is attributed to the growth of the cineraria. This hybrid flower is not typically found growing in the wild; it was developed in the British Royal Gardens in 1777, two centuries before this woodcut was made.
The delicate movement of this piece is a testament to the artistry of Phillip's woodcuts. In the upper right corner, there are an artist's initial and indications of the edition on the bottom left, #211 out of 300.
