Rue Clark en Hiver is a gorgeous 12 x 18 inch oil on canvas piece by Canadian Artist, John Little. Painted in 2005, this piece recreates a photograph of the snowy streets of Montreal taken in the early 1970’s. The painting’s subjects, bundled in their winter hats and scarves, take a second to stop and chat with one another, gathered on the sidewalk under the bare branches of the streets towering trees.
While Little utilizes many grey tones in this piece, however the spattering of brown and green in the rows of houses brings warmth to the scene. With its converging lines, the composition draws the viewer’s eye down towards the vanishing point and through a lens back to a time when Buick Lesabres and Chevy Impalas lined the streets. The detail that Little was able to capture in a piece of this size is quite phenomenal, each brushstroke meticulously considered.
