He began his formal training at the Art Association of Montreal, studying under influential Canadian artists such as Arthur Lismer and Goodridge Roberts between 1945 and 1947. Seeking further experience, he moved to New York to study at the Art Students League of New York, where he trained under notable instructors including Will Barnet and Frank J. Reilly. During this time, he also worked as an assistant on the “Bruce Gentry” comic strip, gaining a strong sense of composition and visual storytelling.
Returning to Montreal in 1951, Little joined his father’s architectural firm, an experience that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. His understanding of structure, perspective, and design became a defining element of his paintings, which often depict streetscapes, buildings, and neighbourhoods with remarkable accuracy and sensitivity. He also contributed illustrations to the Montreal Star, further refining his ability to capture the character of the city.
In Queen Elizabeth Hotel Under Construction, Allan Memorial, Little turns his attention to a moment of transformation within Montreal’s built environment. His work often documents scenes that are either changing or at risk of disappearing. Through careful observation and balanced composition, he captures not only the physical structure of the city but also its atmosphere and memory.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Little became one of Canada’s most important painters of urban life. His style evolved from more vibrant and expressive early works to increasingly refined and realistic depictions, always grounded in direct observation. His paintings serve as both historical records and personal interpretations of Montreal’s evolving identity.
Little’s contributions were formally recognized through his election to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, where he became an Associate in 1961 and a full Academician in 1973. His work is held in major collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
Through works such as Queen Elizabeth Hotel Under Construction, Allan Memorial, John Little leaves behind an enduring visual record of Montreal.
