On a Country Road by Berthe Des Clayes is a 11.5 x 13.5 inch pastel on paper that is protected by museum glass. The piece is signed in the bottom left corner. It depicts a man in a horse-drawn cart making his way down a worn dirt path leading off into the distance.
Des Clayes uses a menagerie of colour to create a cheerful, almost whimsical scene. Bright orange and red leaves of towering maple trees frame the composition, complimenting the periwinkle blue sky above. Rustic structures portrayed in hues of pink, green and red line the quaint country road. Des Clayes was able to achieve incredible detail in her pastel works, using meticulous and precise strokes and layers upon layers of colour. The fondness she held for the rural Canadian landscape is evident in this piece.
On a Country Road was on display at Watson Art Galleries in Montreal before joining the Rookleys collection.
