William Brymner’s Sailboat is a watercolour on paper depicting a small sailing vessel pulled ashore at low tide. The boat fills much of the foreground, its dark wooden hull, furled blue-grey sail, mast and intricate rigging rendered with loose but confident washes. A narrow stream of water winds through the marshy ground beside it, while broad areas of fresh green and yellow suggest tidal flats or coastal meadows.

Across the water, low hills and scattered buildings form a quiet distant shoreline beneath a pale, overcast sky. Brymner balances the solid weight of the grounded boat with the delicacy of the rigging and the openness of the landscape, creating an intimate maritime scene marked by soft light, muted colour and a strong sense of stillness.
