Winnie Chen’s Blue Jay #2 presents a single blue jay in profile, perched lightly against a largely open white ground. The bird is rendered with a restrained palette of cobalt, ultramarine, pale blue, grey, and black, with the darker markings of the head and neck giving definition to the softer washes of the body.

Chen keeps the composition deliberately simple, allowing the bird to become the entire focus. The tail feathers rise diagonally at the left, creating movement, while the compact body and sharply pointed beak give the blue jay a lively, alert character. Small dark accents around the eye, feet, and wing markings add structure without interrupting the delicacy of the image.

The pale perch is suggested with only a few transparent washes, leaving much of the paper untouched. This use of negative space gives Blue Jay #2 a light, airy quality and emphasizes Chen’s economical handling of watercolour. The result is an intimate study that captures both the recognizable colouring and the quick, attentive presence of the bird.
