Winnie Chen’s Hummingbird captures the bird in mid-flight as it reaches toward a cluster of soft violet blossoms. Its long, slender beak extends diagonally into the flowers, while the body is rendered in vivid washes of green, yellow, and touches of magenta around the throat. The raised wing is described with translucent browns and greys, allowing the feather structure to remain visible without becoming overly detailed.
Chen leaves much of the paper untouched, giving the hummingbird a light, suspended quality. Loose lavender washes above and below the bird suggest flowers and surrounding vegetation while maintaining an airy, almost dreamlike atmosphere. The contrast between the sharply focused eye and beak and the softer treatment of the wings and blossoms creates a convincing sense of movement.
The composition emphasizes delicacy and immediacy, capturing a fleeting moment of the hummingbird feeding among flowers while retaining the fluid, spontaneous character of watercolour.
