Steven Henderson’s Winter Announcement captures a wooded landscape at the threshold of winter, where patches of snow spread across the forest floor beneath tall, leafless trees. A dark central trunk anchors the composition, while surrounding branches rise and divide against a clear blue-violet sky.
The foreground is painted with broad passages of violet, blue, burgundy and white, suggesting fresh snow broken by exposed earth and long winter shadows. In the middle distance, warm ochres and muted golds provide a striking contrast, hinting at the last remnants of autumn before the season fully changes.
Henderson uses bold, energetic brushwork and strong colour contrasts to create a sense of crisp air and changing light. The scene feels transitional rather than deeply wintry, making the title Winter Announcement especially fitting: the first snow has arrived, but traces of the previous season remain.
