Sam Paonessa’s Ritchie Falls captures a rugged stretch of fast-moving water as it rushes between massive rock formations. Deep blues, turquoise, violet, and near-black tones give the river a dramatic intensity, while streaks of white paint describe the foam and turbulence of the current. The surrounding rocks are built up with broad, angular strokes in mauve, rose, grey, and earthy brown, creating a strong sense of weight and texture.

The composition is tightly focused on the falls, with the water cutting diagonally through the scene and drawing the eye from the upper left toward the lower right. Dark evergreens and shadowed forest close in around the river, heightening the contrast between the cool, luminous water and the heavy rock walls. Paonessa’s energetic brushwork gives the scene a physical sense of movement, emphasizing the force of the current and the raw character of the Canadian wilderness.
