The Tower Above the Bay, c. 1950 by Guillermo Bestard (1881–1969) depicts a charming seaside village, with three small boats resting on the sandy shore and another gently bobbing in the bay. Across the water, a hillside village leads the eye upward to the local church perched near the top of the hill. The composition bursts with colour and energy, as bold, confident brushstrokes convey a sense of movement and harmony. The sky rolls above in a medley of blues, whites, purples, and yellows, mirrored in the shimmering waters below, while the clustered houses on the hillside dance with joyful tones, creating a scene that feels free, bright, and serene.

Guillermo Bestard was born in 1881 and developed his artistic career during the first half of the 20th century. His work reflects a keen attention to colour, light, and atmosphere, and he frequently depicted landscapes and village scenes with a sense of vitality and optimism. Bestard’s artistic approach combined observation with expressive brushwork, producing compositions that capture both place and emotion.

This oil on board is signed bottom right and measures 10 x 13.5 inches. The Tower Above the Bay, c. 1950 radiates a sense of leisurely happiness, inviting viewers to linger in its vibrant, uplifting atmosphere while showcasing Bestard’s mastery of colour, composition, and the lively charm of coastal life.
