Peter Cheung’s Victory in Sight is an energetic equestrian racing painting showing two racehorses and jockeys charging forward in close competition. The work is set against a largely open white ground, which removes almost all background detail and places full emphasis on speed, gesture and the physical force of the horses.

Cheung uses loose, expressive brushwork to create the sensation of motion. The horses are built from dark blacks, browns and warm chestnut tones, with quick strokes suggesting legs, tails, muscles and flying hooves. The jockeys, one in blue and the other in purple, lean low over their horses, intensifying the sense of urgency and forward drive.

The composition feels spontaneous and highly dynamic. Sweeping linear marks around the horses act almost like trails of movement, capturing the blur of a race rather than a fixed, detailed moment. The white background gives the painting a sketch-like immediacy, while the dense colour in the horses and riders creates a strong focal point.

Victory in Sight captures the drama of the final stretch: two competitors pushing toward the finish, their forms partially abstracted by speed. It is a lively contemporary sporting image, focused less on the setting of the racetrack and more on the intensity, rhythm and exhilaration of the race.
