Peter Cheung’s The Lake and I is an expressive, light-filled marine scene showing a sailboat moving across open water beneath a glowing sun. The boat sits slightly left of centre, its pale triangular sails catching the light as it cuts through the choppy surface of the lake. A small red accent near the stern adds a lively note against the otherwise cool palette.
The composition is built around the path of sunlight stretching from the sky down across the water. Cheung uses broad, gestural strokes of white, cream, blue, green, and turquoise to suggest glittering reflections and restless movement. The lake fills most of the painting, with darker blues in the foreground giving way to brighter, sunlit water near the horizon.
The sky is atmospheric and dramatic, painted in soft mauves, greys, pinks, and pale yellows. Rather than rendering the scene in tight detail, Cheung emphasizes sensation: wind, glare, motion, and the feeling of being out on the water. The result is a bright, impressionistic painting with a sense of freedom and solitude, where the single sailboat becomes both subject and emotional focal point.
