David Drum’s Wisteria (Drum Inventory #4493) is an exuberant study of flowering vines cascading across a luminous blue and violet background. Masses of pale cream, yellow, pink, and soft lavender blossoms spill horizontally across the upper portion of the composition, while trailing green leaves and curling reddish stems create a rhythmic sense of movement.
Drum uses loose, highly expressive brushwork, allowing individual flowers and leaves to dissolve into colour and gesture rather than precise botanical detail. The cool blues of the background contrast with the warmer blossoms, making the wisteria appear almost suspended in light. Toward the right, denser foliage and deeper purples add weight to the composition, while the open blue area below gives the painting a spacious, airy quality.
The result is decorative and atmospheric, emphasizing the abundance, colour, and drifting movement of wisteria in bloom.
