David Drum’s Under the Pier shows a lively beach scene viewed from the shade of a pier, where families and children gather in the shallow surf. The dark vertical supports of the pier frame the right side of the composition, contrasting with the bright blue water and sunlit waves beyond. On the left, an adult holds a small child close, while other children crouch, splash, and wade through the foamy shoreline.

The work has a soft, pastel quality, with broken colour and textured marks used to suggest light flickering across water, wet sand, and moving figures. Drum captures the shimmer of a hot summer day through blues, turquoises, whites, oranges, and warm flesh tones. The figures are loosely defined, but their gestures feel natural and immediate, giving the scene a strong sense of memory and everyday life.

In Under the Pier, David Drum creates a nostalgic image of childhood at the beach. The composition balances intimacy and openness: the shaded family group in the foreground feels close and protective, while the rolling waves and distant horizon open the scene outward into summer light, noise, and movement.
