David Drum’s Old Crystal Beach is a bright, sun-filled beach scene built from loose, energetic strokes of colour. At the centre of the composition, a cluster of parasols in vivid orange, blue, white, and red anchors the shoreline, creating a lively burst of warmth against the surrounding blues of the water and sky. Beneath them, small shadowed figures gather in the heat of the day, while two bathers stand near the water’s edge to the left. Farther out, a line of sailboats drifts across the horizon, their dark hulls and pale sails giving the scene a quiet sense of distance and summer leisure.

In Old Crystal Beach, David Drum uses an impressionistic handling of paint that favours atmosphere over precise detail. The foreground is especially fluid, with creamy whites, pale yellows, pinks, and streaks of blue suggesting sunlit sand, reflected glare, and the shifting edge of shallow water. The brushwork is broad and expressive, giving the whole painting a feeling of movement, heat, and salt air. The result is not a tightly defined topographical view, but a vivid memory of a beach day, where colour, light, and mood matter more than exact description.
