Woodland Cascade - Niagara Escarpment, painted in 2023 by artist David Drum, places the viewer deep in a lush wood, where they come upon a rushing stream.
Painted in oil on foam core, the 8 x 10 inch piece is slightly darker in colour than other pieces of nature and woodland subject matter by Drum. In such a way the audience may feel enclosed by the tree canopy above them and by the rising forest floor around them. Despite this, Drum’s penchant for bright saturated colours is still featured in the stippled leaves of the trees and those fallen to the forest floor.
One of the main focal points, the white tree, tips to the left reaching over the water. In doing so, it obstructs the audience’s view upstream, however contributes to the secretive ambiance created by the composition. One can imagine walking through the dense wood before discovering the hidden body of water.
