In Misty Afternoon (1965), Ken Danby presents a farm scene rendered in watercolour. The composition is split: at left, a weathered barn corner stands in sharp detail, complete with cracked concrete, slatted wooden panels, and a rich, dark red curtain receding into the shadow. At right, a wintry landscape, bare trees stretch upward from a dry, ochre-toned field. A wire fence crosses the scene.
Measuring 33 x 26.25 inches, this large watercolour is protected under museum glass. Signed and dated by the artist in the bottom right corner, it exemplifies Danby’s early mastery of realism and mood, years before he became widely recognized for his iconic figurative work.
