Umbrellas and Shade by Joseph Rolph is a watercolour on paper that is protected by museum glass. The painting was produced in 1912 and is signed and dated in the bottom right. The piece depicts a street scene straight from the past. A laneway lined with trees leads the eye into the composition where a group of people in brightly coloured clothes, carrying umbrellas can be seen strolling into the distance. A horse-drawn carriage makes its way through the street and a man wearing a suit and hat rides a bicycle in the shade of the overhanging trees.
Rolph uses simple strokes to capture the figures in this piece and a strong contrast between light and dark to add interest and movement. This painting was part of a private collection in Niagara before joining Rookleys Canadian Art.
