Deep Canyon by Jack Beder is a 40 x 28 acrylic painting signed bottom left. The vertical orientation of the piece enhances the towering and enclosed feeling of the dynamic canyon. Rather than offering a distant panoramic view, the perspective is pulled into the space between the cliffs, almost standing inside the canyon walls themselves. You can almost reach out and touch the tracks of the rock assembly. Bold, warm hues exuberant from the canvas: rich terracottas, rusty reds, burnt oranges, and lavender purples that are brighter in person. The moving wavy bands of colour solidifying the sedimentary layers are created and shaped with lavender and terracotta. As you look inward, the eroded textures of the canyon’s geology have the care and style that Beder takes with all of his landscapes. Blending realist landscape with impasto stylization adds inner fire with a sense of resonance.

This piece was displayed in our Rookleys exhibition, Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada.
