Laurentian Woods by Jack Beder is a 20 x 13 gouache acquired directly from the estate. What is portrayed as coniferous trees from the straight, tall growing trees that have dark green needles. The ancient trees that date back over 300 million years can be pointed as the subject matter of Laurentian woods. The high elevation of the tree crowns gives more perspective to the tree trunks and how it elevates the eyes upward. With vibrant colours everywhere, sprawling from the south points towards west and east are two tree trunks highlighted with light blue, with apple and forest green needles. The impasto technique, using dabs of paint and prioritizing the texture of fine detailing of the needles compliments the bold colours of this piece. With sunlight coming through the needles, we see the play of shadows and highlights with coral and amber red colouring surfacing the forest floor.

Known for his Montreal street scenes and coastal scenes, Laurentian Woods is a strong example of the artist's talent for vibrant and strong landscapes outside of the city and ocean.

This piece was displayed in our Rookleys exhibition, Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada.
