Jack Beder’s Studio Corner (1977) offers a glimpse into the artist’s personal workspace. This drawing on paper presents a thoughtfully observed still life drawn directly from the objects in his studio, paintings, books and a sculpture resting on a work surface near the corner of the room. These were not staged items, but rather the authentic look of Beder’s daily practice.
By the late 1970s, Beder was confined to indoor work due to chronic illness and harsh winters. Studio Corner reflects this shift, depicting the beauty of the space that where the creative process happens.
Executed in charcoal, the piece demonstrates Beder’s skill in rendering depth, light, and texture with charcoal alone. The soft smudging and dramatic contrast between highlights and shadows evoke both the energy of the artist’s workspace.This work measures 11.5 x 14.5 inches and is signed and dated by the artist on the lower left. It is featured on page 150 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery, and is catalogued as inventory #274A from the Beder estate.
