Stumps in Lake #2, 1956 by Jack Beder is an 11 x 12 watercolour on paper, protected by museum glass. This vivid watercolour depicts a cluster of weathered tree stumps emerging from the surface of a lake. The lighter greens, blues, and browns of the stumps are beautiful against the vibrant green and deep blues of the lake. Beder’s confident brushwork and layered washes give depth to the lake water and the tree stumps. In the far distance, we see the mountain hills in a dark emerald green, giving the composition depth and contour. Below the horizon line, we see miniature stumps that Beder painted to provide an extra level of detailing to a brilliantly textured piece.
