Field Flower and Lily by Jack Beder is an 18 x 12 pastel drawing acquired directly from the estate. A still life of flowers in a glass mason jar with an aqua covering. The jar, wrapped in a light blue-green label or paper, has a bouquet of yellow contrasted dramatically with a single orange lily, covering a third of the rainbow colour wheel. Nothing else is sketched for the flowers to compete with for visual attention, except for a tiny succulent in the left background shade. The shadows are carefully drawn against a box, playing with the light of perspective. The grounded black background has speckles of pink backing shading through, creating elegance in this domestic interior.
Beder loved to create still lives in the confines of his warm home when the weather started getting colder in Canada. This is a prime example of the colourful life that was taken from outside to the brush of the artist's home.
This piece was displayed in our Rookleys exhibition, Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada.
