Breakers, New Brunswick by George Horne Russell is an 8.3 x 10.3 inch oil on panel that was produced circa 1920 and signed in the bottom left corner. The painting depicts a maritime seashore. Vigorous waves crash down on the rocky coastline. A lighthouse can be seen in the distance perched atop a small island. Russell uses loose, gestural brushstrokes and a rainbow of colour to depict the water, which contrast with the grey skies overhead. He is perfectly able to capture the chaos of the ocean and its violent and unpredictable movement.
The painting was part of Ernest E. Poole collection #327 and was also on display at Alex Fraser Galleries in Vancouver before becoming part of the Rookleys collection.
