Spring Break Up by Frank Hennessey is a 13.25 x 17.38 inch pastel on paper that is protected under museum glass. The piece was produced circa 1935 and is signed in the bottom right corner. It depicts a snow covered forest, a small stream trickling through the centre leading the eye through the composition. The white trunks of birch trees are reflected in the stream’s still waters and hills can be seen off into the distance. Hennessey manages to convey a calm and stillness in this piece as the viewer gazes into the quiet forest, the snow still fresh and untouched.
Hennessey was well known for his depictions of nature and his ability to bring landscapes to life, particularly winter scenes. He was also known for his masterful use of pastels and oils.
