La Tour de L’Eglise by Caroline Armington is a 12 x 8.5 inch etching on paper produced in 1923 and protected under museum glass. The piece is number sixteen in a series of one hundred and is signed in the bottom right corner. The black and white etching depicts a traditional cityscape from the early 1900’s. Tall, slender houses line a cobblestone street and the ornate steeple of a church towers in the distance. Figures walk the laneway going about their daily tasks, involved in conversation. Armington uses vigorous cross-hatching to create the perception of a shadow on the street. She had an incredible ability to depict fine detail in her work that is evident in this piece.
